    You can find the answer in the manual here:

    Check out page 3 (middle of the right column). You can have the EL set to 1.5 seconds or 3 seconds.

    With my Mudman G9000MX, I have to hold the Adjust (A) button in timekeeping mode until the seconds start blinking and then press the upper right (B) button to switch from 3-second to 5-second illumination. There's a circle/flash display indicator that changes from small to large.
